Jonathan Livingston Seagull
“The seagull itself sounds boring lah. Do not
watch the movie. Even my house got seagull then,” said my beloved anonymous
friend.
That is what has been said by one of my
friend. When I heard the word of “seagull”, I totally imagined about a really small,
tiny bird creature. What I mean is, it has the same physical with a normal bird
but the type of this one is seagull. Plus, my friend was reviewing the novel as
boring. I thought he was right. Then, I know the character of the seagull itself
is portraying a great self-independent.
The book portrays the story of Jonathan Livingston
Seagull, a seagull who is tired with the daily squabbles over
food. Motivated by a passion to fly, he forces himself, learning the
whole things he can about flying,
until at last, his unwillingness to conform results in his expulsion from
his flock. An outcast, he proceeds to learn, becoming more pleased with his abilities as he conducts an idyllic life.
Last but not least, it may need only 30 minutes to finish
reading, but the short story may
clear the mind and remove the views, like a walk on the beach breathing in the
salty air.
It is easy nowadays,
35 years on, to review the real concept of the book, and though there is a
group of people who views it as naive, the reality is it portrays epic ideas
about human abilities.
At the moment you
go to the beach, you meet seagulls often squabbling over a single French fry or
a bread crust, then wondering, “How they squabble if there is not a single
thing to squabble with?” At the end of the day, the short story tells us that many
people are represented as the seagulls in Jonathan's group; if they only got
out of their close mentalities, they should realize what riches they are
deserved with.
Such as the English
explorer of the similar name, Jonathan Livingston knows that "The gull
sees farthest who flies highest". If seeking total improvements in your
life, the short story might inspire the motivation that you need.
